As the child of a chiropractor, even from a young age, I had some understanding of what my Dad does, which grew with time. I remember being a little marketer in my middle school age. My parents would get a giggle out of it when they would hear, because they never told me to do that. When I heard my teacher say their back hurt or something, I would tell them they should see my parents. I will also say that I have needed a chiropractor since I was young. Being a chronic anxiety sufferer, a lot of stress builds in my neck and shoulder area.
What my Dad does may seem scary if you are unfamiliar with the mechanics. I did not understand it myself until I went to college and started needing a chiropractor and wanted one that used a similar technique to what my Dad does, as I knew what worked for me. An article I found gave a great description, “During a back adjustment, your back undergoes quick, gentle stretching of the spinal facet joint, so you may hear a cracking or popping noise. This is caused by small pockets of air or bubbles, which are in the fluid that surrounds your joints. When joint tissues are stretched during a chiropractic adjustment, the pockets of air “pop,” which creates that cracking sound you hear. After this treatment, you may feel more movement in your back. However, the muscles may still be sore and tight. ” (Grassi, 2019).
As someone who has experienced more than one technique type, I believe that it is more than okay to have a preference. I have only experienced two styles, but look around to find your preference. A chiropractor should not be offended that someone may choose not to make another appointment, out of style preference or cost-related problems.
