A chiropractor can both diagnose and treat musculoskeletal disorders, as well as various aches and pains that are common in daily life. Chiropractors generally use a technique called manual manipulation to adjust the spine and other areas of the body. Many can use additional techniques such as massage, heat therapy, electrical stimulation and more to reduce inflammation and pain and to help the body heal. Chiropractic care is typically more associated with back pain. A chiropractor can also treat neck pain, headaches, sciatica, and many other types of pain. As we move ahead in this article, we will be delving deeper into examples of conditions that chiropractors can and do treat as we move forwards.
Examples of Conditions that Chiropractic Care can Treat
Arthritis
The Arthritis Foundation had this to say about Chiropractic Care as an option for treating Arthritis:
“If you have back or neck pain due to osteoarthritis, chiropractic is one of the safest therapies you can use, explains Scott Haldeman, MD, . . . But if you have . . . rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis, you are going to need to be more careful.”
Though there are options for those with inflammatory conditions, including electrotherapy and low-level laser or “cold laser”.
Whiplash
Whiplash is a neck injury that can happen from car accidents, sports injuries, a fall, or physical abuse. This can happen due to forceful, rapid back and forth movement of the neck, like the cracking of a whip. If you are in any accident where you think your neck has been thrown around in this manner or similarly, you want to get it looked at as soon as possible. Pain can occur from accidents like this within a day or two, and can feel debilitating.
Sciatica
The sciatic nerve originates in the buttock, runs down the leg, and stops in the foot sole. If this nerve is compressed or damaged, it can lead to pain. According to Penn Medicine, “Sciatica pain can vary widely. It may feel like a mild tingling, dull ache, or burning sensation. In some cases, the pain is severe enough to make a person unable to move.” A herniated disc is one of the most common reasons for such nerve damage. In such cases, spinal adjustments can be part of the treatment plan to alleviate the symptoms.
Anxiety and Depression
Anxiety and depression are conditions that Chiropractic care can treat. Among the symptoms of both conditions is muscle tension which can be treated through Chiropractic care. There is a concept that is often talked about in holistic medicine called the “Mind Body connection.” On a blog, this holistic practicioner put it the best: “Simply put, the mind-body connection refers to how your physical health is intertwined with how you feel, think, and behave.”
There are many more conditions and daily aches and pains that chiropractic care can treat. Consult with you local physician and chiropractor to see how they might be able to help you!
